About Us

Natural Fish Breeding is a Mongolian non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 2019. Our mission is to conserve the rare Hucho taimen and other game fish species through research, hatchery programs, species reintroduction, and environmental protection in the river basins across Mongolia and the headwaters of the Selenge River.
Our office is located at Suite 501, 5th Floor, New Millennium Building, 18th Khoroo, Khan-uul District, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Our field operations take place along the rivers of Mongolia and the Selenge River headwaters.
Natural Fish Breeding was founded in 2019 by a group of passionate conservationists committed to protecting Mongolia's freshwater biodiversity. Our long-term vision is outlined in the Natural Fish Breeding 2030.

Conservation

Hucho taimen (Таймень) is the world's largest salmonid fish and one of Mongolia's most iconic freshwater species. It is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to overfishing, habitat degradation from mining and agriculture, and climate-driven changes to river systems. The river basins across Mongolia is one of its last remaining strongholds.
Our fish reproduction and hatchery program raises juvenile taimen and other native species under controlled conditions. Fish are monitored for health and growth before being reintroduced into suitable river habitats. The program is designed to supplement wild populations while we work to address the root causes of decline.
Our primary focus area is the river basins across Mongolia and the headwaters of the Selenge River — one of the major river systems feeding into Lake Baikal. These waterways have historically received little conservation attention, making our work especially critical.

Get Involved

We welcome volunteers for field surveys, community outreach, and hatchery assistance. No prior experience is required — we provide full training. Visit our Volunteer page to learn about available roles and apply.
For international volunteers, English is sufficient for most roles. Our team includes bilingual staff who coordinate field and outreach activities. We encourage you to contact us to discuss your background and how best to contribute.
Yes. We actively seek partnerships with research institutions, environmental NGOs, government agencies, and private sector organizations. If your organization shares our goals, please reach out via our contact form to explore collaboration opportunities.

Donations

You can support our work through our Support page. Donations go directly toward field research, hatchery operations, and community education programs. Every contribution makes a measurable difference.
Donations fund three core areas: (1) scientific field surveys and ecological monitoring, (2) hatchery operations and species reintroduction, and (3) community outreach and environmental education programs in river basin communities.

Research

Our research covers fish population surveys, river habitat assessment, water quality monitoring, and taimen migration studies. We use electrofishing, snorkel surveys, and acoustic tagging to gather population data that informs both our hatchery program and government conservation policy.
We are committed to open science. Select reports and publications are available through our News section. For research collaboration or data requests, please contact us at info@chuluuttul.org.
